Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between the local culture of the Sasak people on Lombok Island and their traditional astronomical knowledge in the context of determining the Bau Nyale date using the Rowot Sasak Calendar. The research method includes literature review and secondary documentation analysis to gather data on the structure and calculation of the Rowot Sasak Calendar and its application in cultural practices. The results show that the Rowot Sasak Calendar employs the windon pattern, an eight-year cycle that regulates leap and common years based on the remainder of division by eight. This calendar incorporates a lunar system in its calculations, where odd months have 30 days and even months have 29 days, except in leap years. The implementation of this calendar in determining the Bau Nyale date involves observing the position of the Pleiades star cluster and the moon phases, highlighting the importance of traditional astronomical knowledge in the Sasak people's lives. The study concludes that the Sangkep Warige tradition, including the determination of the Bau Nyale date, is a rich and significant cultural heritage that preserves traditional astronomical knowledge and strengthens the cultural identity of the Sasak community.
